theatre Studies Portfolio. :: essays research papers
During the time the writings we have examined have given us motivation on the point and topics of our conceived dramatization. The writings we have concentrated in Theater Studies have been Anton Chekovââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Three Sistersâ⬠and Sophoclesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Antigoneâ⬠, one of the three Theban plays. The connection between these assumes is the job of ladies and could be depicted as proto-women's activist. ââ¬Å"Antigoneâ⬠shows us a lady who is set up to conflict with the standard of the city and Creon, whom ought to be the predominant male in the play. ââ¬Å"Three Sistersâ⬠depicts three ladies who adapt to the demise of their dad, and live without men in their lives. We have utilized both of these thoughts in our conceived show, as the entirety of our ladies are single and conflict with the cliché perspective on ladies permitting the crowd to see a differentiation of five ladies, each of the a foil to the conventional perspective on ladies in the catholi c church. We have likewise been impacted by an assortment of verse we have concentrates on our English Literature course. Ditty Ann Duffy is notable as a women's activist essayist and her 1999 assortment, ââ¬Å"The World Wifeâ⬠is a unique assortment wherein she investigates the perspective on the spouses of authentic, scriptural and fanciful men and allows the peruser to see the extraordinary stories concerning these men through the eyes of the lady, who is frequently demonstrated to be considerably more quality in character than her significant other or accomplice. Subsequent to examining the sonnets, our gathering chose to put together our five female characters with respect to sonnets in the play, these sonnets being ââ¬Å"Delilahâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Mrs Faustâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Mrs Midasâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Salmoneâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Mrs Lazarusâ⬠. Utilizing these as rules for our characters, the five young ladies in our gathering had the option to expand on at that point, utilizing the meth ods of our professional, Stanisvlaski, to make a full character from the story in our chose sonnets. Caryl Churchillââ¬â¢s play ââ¬Å"Top Girlsâ⬠was additionally an effect on us. The play ââ¬Å"Top Girlsâ⬠shows the crowd well known ladies from the past hosting a supper get together and talking about their encounters to each other. This isn't not normal for our conceived dramatization and impacted us to pick the setting of a social event. The 1995 film ââ¬Å"How To Make An American Quiltâ⬠coordinated by Jocelyn Moorhouse enlivened us for the possibility of our ladies making a blanket together to remember the memory of an individual from the town in which our play is set.

Ladies have additionally experienced battles confronting segregation in light of sexual orientation. They have being doing likewise work that men do however a great deal of the time they don't get a similar compensation. It was not until the common war that ladies were even permitted to work. Ladies were not recruited for occupations that were viewed as employments for guys. In the 1960ââ¬â¢s ladies just involved two percent of administrative positions. The establishing fathers of our country resulted in these present circumstances nation to rehearse their religion. Albeit, one of the underlying foundations of migration into this nation was the quest for opportunity of religion, numerous elements have been segregated as a people. In the event that we investigate our history, we can discover a few models. One of them is General Ulysses S. Award who gave a request to take out the Jewish individuals from states Tennessee,Kentucky, and mississippi that were heavily influenced by him. The greater part of the states in the U.S don't let individuals of a similar sex wed. Inside the most recent ten years states have been easing up, and are letting gays and lesbians wed each other under the law. These individuals have been separated since this nation has been shaped . At the point when HIV previously came out it was known as a ââ¬Å"gay manââ¬â¢s illness â⬠implying that you must be gay to get that malady. Donald Trump and VP Mike Pence don't put stock in gay marriage and this is another obstruction confronting the LGBT people group. They have been focused on and tormented in numerous schools around the nation. Sexual separation was found in the military. Authorities used to dispatch what they called ââ¬Å"witch huntsâ⬠to discover gay soldiers and boot them out of the administration. Numerous residents that don't have the physical capacity have been abandoned and not dealt with the manner in which they ought to be. These individuals for quite a while and still today get harassed in school, have no companions, and don't get the help that they need and have the right to have the option to do the things that they need. A great deal of times these individuals get badgering in the working environment since they don't have a similar capacity as others. To enable these individuals to out the legislature passed a law called American with handicaps act to guarantee that individuals with incapacities get appropriate convenience in the workforce and furthermore get assurance under being terminated just exclusively in light of the fact that they are crippled. I have taken in a great deal in the course. All the issues that this nation is confronting encompassing prejudice and individuals tolerating each other for what their identity is and what they speak to. I have additionally been presented to a wide range of things like peopleââ¬â¢s societies and the hardships that they face every day. The class has made me increasingly mindful of how profoundly segregation exists in our general public, and the battles that individuals have experienced to conquer make our nation a progressively satisfactory society. I discovered that we have gains yet at the same time have far to go. Subsequent to taking this class I have improved as an individual. Fixing these issues that society battles all in all isn't a simple undertaking. So as to make changes with need to begin with our young ages, and make it an identify the educational systems to instruct and concentrate on tolerating each other regardless of what the conditions encompassing that individual. When we make the residents mindful that regardless of what we accept, or how extraordinary we look, or whatever sexual direction and sex we might be we are all piece of humankind. On the off chance that we make these social changes beginning with our small kids, at that point this nation will refocus to satisfy its guarantee of being a country which acknowledges everybody regardless of shading, race, sex. Besides we need to choose lawmakers that follows these belief systems that we are hoping to have in this nation. Numerous individuals in our general public have confronted numerous difficulties whether it is a result of their religion, sex, physical capacity, and sexual direction. This nation has made considerable progress from victimizing these gatherings however we despite everything have a great deal of work to do in the event that we need this nation to be completely tolerating of everybody. A great deal of these issues that we face as a culture should be halted starting from the top. On the off chance that the president can turn out to be increasingly open and lenient of others, at that point that would be a significant advance in fixing this wreckage between various gatherings. What I have examined in this article about the present pattern of bigotry, sexism and segregation isn't new, As the celebrated maxim goesâ⬠History rehashes itselfâ⬠. At the establishing of our american majority rules system with the Declaration of Independence ('1776) and the US Constitution (1789)all men should be equivalent under the law. Be that as it may, ladies didn't get the option to cast a ballot until the year 1919 with the selection of the nineteenth amendment of the constitution. Most states didn't permit wedded ladies to keep their property until the start of the twentieth century. Preceding the 29th century , womenââ¬â¢s legitimate status was that of asset they were the lawful property of their Husbands and fathers. The couple of ladies from the late nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century who had the option to get law degrees, clinical and science degrees got themselves underemployed in light of the fact that businesses would not like to recruit ladies in these callings. It wasnââ¬â¢t until the late 1970 that most states passed segregations law to ensure inclination operator sexual orientation. Truly, Blacks have likewise been separated the legitimate and political arrangement of our nation. In spite of the fact that the thirteenth amendment finished bondage in 1865 and the fourteenth amendment (1868)guaranteed equivalent insurance under the law for all people, isolation and the disavowal of casting a ballot rights to blacks and other racial minorities persevered until the reception of the government casting a ballot rights in 1965. Separation in work employing and access to lodging was likewise widespread until the appropriation of the Civil rights Acts in 1964. Truly, a wide range of outsider gatherings were segregated and kept from entering the United States. For instance, the chinese avoidance act instituted in 1882 disallowed migration of every chinese worker despite the fact that ââ¬ironicallyâ⬠past ages of chinese workers were abused to fabricate the extraordinary railroad framework that extended the riches and development of the mainland United States. A considerable lot of these laws were not canceled until after the subsequent world war in 1948. Other ethnic gatherings (for example Irish and eastern europeans) had exacting constrained quantities for section into the United States. At long last, assurance from segregation dependent on sexual direction has as of late been authorized by just 24 states. There is still no government social equality assurance dependent on sexual direction. Thus, for instance, in the conditions of North Carolina and MIssissippi businesses can terminate or deny advancements to gay workers. We ought to help ourselves to remember this history as we put into point of view the need to perceive and address the present issues of separation dependent on sex, race, ethnic inception and sexual direction. Even after the valiant attempts to scrounge for gold, there was no success. With the large amount of crops that Virginia grew, the colony needed to expand west into new land for more room to grow crops. Fire Incident and Data Organization
Question: Discuss about the Article for Fire Incident and Data Organization. Answer: Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to request an approval of the acquisition of new trucks for the fire department. The truck which I have selected is suitable as per our requirements and as per the emergency service we provide. Its the sole purpose of the proposal is the getting authoritys attention towards our concern and equips the firefighters with the best quality and required truck. The fire department of the city requires a more efficient, powerful and technologically advanced truck so that fireman could easily deal with any fire accident. Facts The Fire department of the city works round the clock to ensure the safety o the citizens and properties against any kind of fire. This is a vast service to do and also comes into one of the emergency services. At any moment the firefighters have to rush to the location where theyll have to give emergency fire protection service. According to a report published by the National Fire Protection association, the total cost due to the fire in the united stated is about $329 billion which is estimated to roughly 2.1 % of the US GDP (Hall, 2014). As the number of fire incidents in the year 2014 has dropped by 29% but still a dangerous event in the US. This is structures fires, a nonhome structure fire and also fire in vehicles. All these cases are considered as the main events. As per the report, the structure fires constitutes of 38 % of total fire events whereas the Outside and other fires stand at 49%. The fire due the highway vehicles stands for about 13 % (Haynes, 2015). The fire department has to be well equipped and well planned for taking care of these events and providing instant relief to the population. The deciding factor in these cases is the time required to reach the event place. In US fire service there are about 1,134,400 firefighters in which about 68 % are volunteers who reside in small and middle towns and provides assistance to the public. In the year 2014 63,350 firefighters injured due to the fire in fire services (John, 1981). Fire accidents in the USA 1(NFPA, 2014 report) Fire accidents in USA 2(NFPA, 2014) Equipment The Fire department has installed fire alarms at different places and also encourages the residents to install fire alarms in their own houses. This provides early warning to the peoples so that they can become aware of the fire. The fire department uses different types of equipment which generally constitutes of fire extinguishers and water cannons which are fixed in different fire trucks. The trucks are the tool which generally used by the firefighters to reach to the event place with all the equipment and fire fighting tools. The trucks which were extensively used by the fire departments have different dimensions and mostly used for fire relief services. Apart from that according to the National Fire protection association the fire department is responsible for the fire safety related works as well as the ambulance service for the victims. This all requires quick response from the associated authorities as well as well-equipped vehicles to so that it will be helpful for the victim s (John, 1981). Specification The selected truck for the fire department has the following specification, these qualities make it a must to have a vehicle. It is more rust resistant than other vehicles we are using which give it a long lasting life span. The truck has a new hybrid engine which is more fuel efficient as compared to other machines. The engine power is much better than the vehicles we are using for the fire protection purpose. The equipment which is fixed in the vehicle such as the water pump has more exhaust power. It means it will provide more water pressure so that we can cover longer areas, the nozzle pressure stands over the diameter of the pipe, the pressure by the pump system. If the pressure remains same the pump of the new truck is much powerful, so it will provide greater nozzle pressure. The truck has more water carrying capacity as well as a number of firefighters. The manufacturers of the truck are also providing medical kits and extra equipment for better fire fighting capacity. They w ill also give offers for more than one purchase of the vehicle. The specification and the qualities make it worth buying for the fire department as this will help the firefighters and the company (Alvarado, 2015). Physical/Technical Specifications The dimension of the truck: Room 24 6 ft2 Manufacturing material: Stainless Steel and Iron Gas/ Diesel efficiency: 30MPG Lifetime: 30 years and more The capacity of the truck is to hold a 100 foot 13/4 inch hand line with an automatic nozzle and capacity of carrying 4 peoples. The pump is more powerful and it also has higher torque than the pump which is installed in our present fire fighting vehicles. These technical specifications of the truck are best suitable for our working condition and emergency services. The pump capacity and the tank capacity will allow us to carry much water and reach a higher height through the greater nozzle pressure (Cappa, 2015). Training and Testing of the firefighters with the new vehicle and equipment will be conducted by the company itself. The new technology and the hybrid engine is will be operated by a newly designed system which is solely based on the new technology. A proper training about the system to the firefighters and related officials. The manufacturer company has also offered a lower price for us if the fire department buys more than one vehicle in a current fiscal year. Cost: The cost of the Truck chassis with the hybrid engine = $1, 20,000 Cost of the Pump = $5000 Equipment = Free Services = the company will provide free service for 3 years. Training and testing= The company will provide free training and testing to our firefighters, which will be based on training the firefighters to carry out the works in a more proficient way. This will save the extra cost of training and service which we will have to bear, in the previous one we had a total cost of $1, 15,000 which was about $ 10,000 less than this truck. IN the working period the present truck showed a lower work performance as expected and we have spent thousands of dollars on the services. By choosing this new truck we can get service for 3 years which will save a significant amount of the firefighting department. The training cost for the employees is about $ 200; this can be saved by providing the training which will be offered by the company. In the commercial view, we are saving a good amount of money in long term, this could be beneficial for us to project the rest sum of money in different other direction and in the improvement of the outdated technology. Timeline The timeline of the purchasing and delivery is approximately 2 months or 8 weeks. We can get a well equipped and designed vehicle for our department in this much lesser time. This can be done because the company has already manufactured trucks and after our approval and submitting the proposal they will only modify and upgrade the truck. The full timeline will consist different tasks like, contacting the manufacturer and getting informations about the truck so that we can know the specification and get authorization from the higher authorities and up gradation of the truck as our requirements. After completion of this step, the next step is the testing the truck at the company, this will be a final testing phase in the presence of the fire department officials. The paperwork related to the acquisition will be done in coming days, the final paperwork will consist different approvals and registration of the4 vehicle. After completion of this stage, the next thing to do is the transfer of the truck to the fire department office where the fighter fighters will be trained by the company executives. The last stage is the process of new fire truck approval. The whole process including the training can be finished in a timeline of 8 weeks; this all will start from 1st April and will finish till 5th of May. Timeline Benefits There are many benefits of this truck over the other vehicle we use for day to day firefighting. Some of the benefits are mentioned below; Capacity: The water carrying capacity of the tank of this truck is more than the previous one. The water carrying capacity of this truck is about 5000-5500 liters whereas the previous one has the4 capacity of 4500 liters. Chassis- The chassis of the truck is made of Steel, which makes it rust proof and the engine is 6 cylinder, 4 stroke hybrid type. Pump: The pump of the truck is more powerful than the previous one which we use currently. The pumps total output pre4ssur is about 2500 LPM at 7kg/cm3. This is better for high altitude firefighting. High-pressure Hose reel- There is two hose reel in both sides, which will allow us to facilitate operation of the high-pressure section. The hose is made of PVC and has a working pressure of 4 kg/ cm2. Cooling system- There is a cooling system attached to the machine which will be used to cool down the machine and the radiator water (Cappa, 2015). Request for approval The above-mentioned specification and qualities of the new trucks is a better option for the fire department. In this time when the effects of fire hazards are increasing day by day and the cost due to is also increasing we need more comprehensive and well-equipped truck. The increased capacity on working side can be achieved by the equipping the fire department and the firefighters with this truck. This proposal is solely based upon approval for this truck, which will allow the department to buy this truck. The higher authorities comprise of the management team and the firefighting engineer must take this issue into consideration so that the firefighting department can work effectively. I request for the approval of this proposed plan of action of the trucks as per the above-mentioned specification and higher technical qualities. Conclusion The proposal project is based on describing the features of the truck over the other available alternatives and working trucks. I have described the physical and technical specifications along with the cost associated with the truck; I have also described the timeline associated with the overall process which is about 8 weeks. In a Gant chart, this is also made in an appropriate manner so that overall process associated with the project can be easily seen to the authorities. The truck for which I am requesting for approval is a technically advances as well as well constructed one. This particular truck follows all the guidelines explained by the National Fire Protection Authority. In a commercial sense, the company also provides a good discount with the purchase of more than one vehicle with the above-mentioned price. Comitatus Essays - Maldon, Essex, Germanic Warfare, Comitatus
Comitatus The concept of comitatus is important for understanding the actions and attitudes of a thane and his relationship to his lord. A band of thanes pledged themselves to a feudal lord who was known for his bravery and generosity. They swore to defend him to their death, and they considered it shameful to leave the battlefield if their chief was slain. According to their loyal code, if their leader was killed, his life must be avenged. He was their lord, and they were his loyal, proud retainers. They were known for their courage, bravery, recklessness, and foremost, for their loyalty. In return the lord provided them with protection and shared his weapons and wealth with them. The Battle of Maldon is a glorification of the ideas of comitatus. This pure heroic poem exemplifies the 'glory' of heroism that is undimmed by the defeat. The real subject of this poem is not the battle but the deeds and deaths of heroes. In many ways, these Anglo Saxon ideas can even be seen in general American society today. Citizens in today's society relate to their leaders in similar ways as thanes related to their lords; this contemporary use of comitatus can be seen in present day sports teams, religious orders, country defenses and fraternities. The American society, however, does not portray the ideas of comitatus when it comes to their political leaders and government. High level of competitiveness in present day sports demands good leadership and comitatus from team members for success. Team leaders are like the lord represented in The Battle of Maldon, because they encourage their teammates to be intent on succeeding in their 'battles' against the opponents. Byrhtnoth, the leader of the English army, encouraged his thanes, urging every young man to be intent on fighting if he wished to win fame at the Dane's expense (112). Comitatus is shown by the teammates who do not give up during the 'battle' and fight until the very end of a match or tournament. The teammates of a team always want to keep their honor and the honor of their captain by fighting hard and never returning home without a valiant effort. Like the thanes in Anglo Saxon literature, the teammates must live with a sense of honor and honor is shown in competitiveness and success. Religious orders in today's society also show sense of comitatus. Like thanes they will fight for their Lord until death and will demand resistance even when all hope of success is gone and retreat would be wiser. In all religions, priests vow to spread the word of their Lord and are ready to loose their lives in doing so. The thanes in The Battle of Maldon also wanted to either lose their lives or avenge their lord (114). Members of a country's defenses have always followed comitatus. As warriors for their country, they are bound by the code of loyalty to their country and are ready to risk their lives in battle. This spirit-code is also seen in The Battle of Maldon, where the brave young men stood brave in battle, eagerly intent on who might be the first in taking the lives of the doomed with their weapons. The slain fell to the earth, but they stood resolute (112). Leaders of present day defenses, however, do not seem to follow the comitatus as in Anglo Saxon literature; they do not fight in a conspicuous place in the front line. Byrhtnoth, lighted down in that place where he most wished to be, where he knew the loyal men of his own household were (109). Fraternities in present day colleges in the US also have a representation of the Anglo Saxon idea of comitatus. Fraternity brothers show a code of loyalty and respect is given to the leaders. They vow to assist each other and encourage each other to success. The thanes also followed this code of loyalty as is shown in The Battle of Maldon: it is needful for us all for each to encourage every other warrior in the fighting? (114). The American society does not seem to follow the ideas of comitatus when it comes to their leaders and government. In Anglo Saxon literature, leaders were respected at all times and were

Mrs. Fields Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Mrs. Fields - Case Study Example However, the main reason behind the dramatic success of the Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ Cookies was its exceptional management philosophy and management information systems (Richman(a)). In the process excessive international expansion, Randy and Debbi, made sure that they have control over all branches and were not in favor of franchising the outlets. According to them, franchising would have resulted in hurting their management philosophy and quality of business (Richman, 5). Debbi believed in guiding the employees with example and regularly visited its stores in this regard. Management information system of the Mrs. Fieldsââ¬â¢ Cookies was designed in order to keep control over all stores and to provide the required information to all store managers in order to take better decisions. Information systems at each store helped the managers in the process of taking important daily operational decisions (Richman, 6). Hence, less autonomy is given to the store managers and employees. On the other hand, LPB had completely different management practices and philosophy. The store managers and employees of LPB were provided with the required autonomy and freedom to take important decisions regarding day to day operations at the bakery. Apart from this, LPB does not have the carefully and cleverly build information system. Randy and Debbi were not able to understand these differences and modify the information system according to the new requirements, which in turn resulted in losses after the acquisition of the LPB by the Fields. INTIAL ACTIONS OF FIELDS UPON ACQUIRING LPB AND ITS ANALYSIS: The first most action taken by the Fields upon the acquisition of the La Pettie Boulangerie (LPE) was the reduction of the overall staff of the bakery chain. The administrative staff was reduced to 3 from 53 (Richman, 9). The reason provided by the Fields for this was that all overhead activities and tasks were integrated with the existing management structure and organization, this inc ludes several important tasks like human resources, finance, training and several other. The three people kept belonged to operations and research and development department (Richman, 9). This step of reducing the staff and merging overhead functions with existing organization allowed to cut down the overall cost of operations. Apart from this, integration of the operations and reduction of staff was supportive to the management practices of Debbi and Randy and they could have gain more control. Although, this decision was taken by the Fields in order to manage the acquisition more effectively and efficiently but at the same time this decision would have resulted in resistance on part of the store manager and other employees of the LPB. The decision of reducing the staff would have discouraged and de-motivated the employees and at the same time the level of trust over the new management would have reduced. SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FIELDS AND LA PETTIE BOULANGERIE: De bi and Randy were of the view that La Pettie Boulangerie (LPB) was similar to their own business. However, it was important to acknowledge first that the similarity between both businesses was only limited to the type of industry in which they were operating, as the products were related to each other. Debi and Randy wanted to enter into a whole new segment in the bakery industry and for this purpose acquired La Pettie Boulang

Bacterial Morphology Essay Example for Free
Bacterial Morphology Essay Question A and C answers. A wet mount stain is when a drop of water is placed onto the microscope slide. The water on the slide helps to support the organism and sample. The water fills the space between the cover slip and the slide. This action allows the light from the microscope to pass through the slide and the sample for better visualization of the organisms. A direct stain occurs when a charged color portion of a basic dye like methylene blue combines with the negatively charged portion of and organism allowing the bacterium to become directly stained. In direct staining, the organisms must be fixed by a process such as heat. Fixing the slide prevents the organism form washing off the slide before visualization. This is accomplished by passing a smear of the bacteria through flame. The heat sets the proteins of the organism thus causing the bacteria to attach to the slide. The organism can become damaged from the setting process and the use of heat prior to staining. In indirect staining, the negatively charged colored portion of an acidic dye is repelled by the negatively charged bacterial cell wall. This causes the background to be stained while leaving the organismââ¬â¢s cell wall to remain colorless and unstained. Question B answers Specific bacterial morphologies noted in exercise one come from the spiral bacteria sample. The shape appears to be corkscrew in nature and vary in length throughout the sample slide. The length varies but the width seems to be uniform. The color most likely arises from the stain used to allow for better visualization of the organism. The Bacillus sample has no discernable morphology and appears as round ended, and cylindrical shaped in nature. The organisms have a black tint which is probably related to the type of statin used for visualization of the organism. Question C Bullet 1 The direct smear sample and the indirect smears shown were different in appearance based on the staining method. The Direct Smear stained slides showed that the cells picked up the dye and were stained for better visualization as well as for differentiation of organisms viewed. The Indirect smears showed visualization of organisms and cells unstained and were visually different from the direct smear. Question D The plaque smears are somewhat circular in areas and irregular in other areas. The appearance is unlike the yeast slide. The plaque smear cells appear to contain a discernable nucleus which is absent in the yeast slide. The yeast smear shows uniformity in the shapes and sizes of the sample provided. The plaque smear shows irregularity in shape but a significant difference in the size of the sample cells provided. Question E I was unable to obtain an oral swab from my cheek but was able to visualize the slide provided and base my response on it. The cheek smear sample shows cells that are irregular in shape and in size. The cells appear to have a darker center which is located in differing regions from cell to cell. The samples appear to be clustered in together and tightly packed. The plaque smears are circular in areas and are in differing patterns and shape compared to the cheek cells. The plaque smears are round and differ in size. The cheek cells are differing in shapes and packed close together. Reference Hands-on-Labs. (2012). Eulogy for Son :: Eulogies Eulogy
Eulogy for Son During the last months, weeks and days of the life of Hays Johnson, during that hard time of his illness, he was not dying. He was living. This may seem to be a matter of semantics or playing with words, but I learned from him during that period a lesson which I had previously only perceived in a fragmentary fashion. When a newborn utters its first loud wail, a sound which touches the hearts of the bystanders, it is perhaps an expression of regret that its stay in this beautiful world is temporary. Perhaps the baby knows what we often forget, that we are all ultimately terminal. I do not think for one moment that in his last days on earth Hays was in a state of denial or rationalization. He knew how sick he was. But he was determined to take the advice of the song: I'm gonna live, live, live until I die. With one important difference. The implication of the song is that one should take from life whatever one can grab before it is too late. Hays wanted to give whatever he could, and it did not matter to him whether his life stretched before him for decades or for hours, he was going to be one and the same, a person who held fast to his integrity, who had a deep interest in everything going on around him, who wanted to be quietly involved, who wanted to contribute in whatever way he could. There was to be a meeting at the synagogue a few weeks ago. He said to me: "I won't be able to make the meeting, but I should like to know your thoughts on it, and I would like to hear what happens." It was not a dying man who could not make that meeting, it was a man who was fully alive, who, if he was impeded by circumstances from doing what he wished, could yet find ways of taking part. Just one week ago I spoke to him on the phone. He wanted to know what I was doing, and on Monday, as I promised, I put in the mail for him the text of some lectures that he wanted to see. He spoke little of sickness or discomfort, and was as pleasant and cheerful as always. It was fun to talk to him, a man a week away from a long anticipated death.

Filipino Customs and Traits Essay
Every nationality has its own customs, traits, characteristics, values, attitudes, and beliefs that were inherited from their great ancestors. They have the possessions of uniqueness as a nation. Filipino people are one of the sole nations in the world. They have their own norms and manners. Until now, those traits are still alive and most of it is continuously transferring to the next generations. Filipinos are best well-known for being hospitable. One good example is whenever there is a visitor, it may be expected or unexpected, they really take such good care, give their full attention, and even serve foods for their visitors. Filipinos are also prominent for their close family ties. Filipinos are close to their families and relatives. They value a big family and they surely help a relative that is someone in need or who needs help. They always have a shoulder that can lean on especially during the hard times. In other countries, once an individual turns 18, itââ¬â¢s their responsibility to be independent and to stand on their own. On the other hand, Filipinos are totally opposite with them because of the close family ties. One concrete example is, almost the third generation of the family still lives on the same house together with the first and second generation. Another instance is, in every occasion, specifically Christmas, new year, birthdays, wedding celebrations, christening, anniversaries, etc. , almost all the members of the family, or even the extended families and relatives are present on those occasions. And also, the parents work hard and sacrifice much for their children, in return, the children love and respect them and take good care of them in their old age. Thatââ¬â¢s how Filipino families are commonly defined. It is said to be that the Filipinos are clever, with retentive memory, rapid insight, and talents for arts and sciences. They are also known for being jolly. The Filipino nation loves to laugh. In every problems and disturbances, still, the Filipino people are smiling and they still find way to laugh. They do believe in the saying: ââ¬Å"Laughter is the best medicine. â⬠Filipinos are not only known for being jolly but also being friendly and chatty. They can stand talking for an hour or more just to chat and talk with their friends. Gratitude is another authentic attribute of the Filipinos. They are appreciative to those who have settled them favors or who are good to them. Their high sense of gratitude is expressed in the phrase ââ¬Å"Utang na loobâ⬠or the debt of honor. Another one is being courteous. They always show respect especially to the elders. ââ¬Å"Pagmamanoâ⬠is one of the things to show respect. Saying ââ¬Å"poâ⬠and ââ¬Å"opoâ⬠is attached to a sentence addressing someone in the third person are signs of respect. Filipinos owing to their beautiful country, liberty-loving and courageous are ardently idealistic. They are enthusiastic in love as they are violent in battle. An example is, they bravely opposed the Spanish, American and Japanese conqueror of their native country. They are one of bravest people of the world. Filipino courage has been proven in the Battle of Mactan, Tirad Pass, Bataan, Corregidor, World War II, and in many other battlefields. Filipinos are helpful, supportive, cooperative and accommodative. They give importance to the asset of helping one another. They treasure the inherited trait of ââ¬Å"bayanihanâ⬠. One concrete example, in cleaning a barangay, all the members of the barangay are present just to help in cleaning their community. And another one is, whenever there is calamities, they help one another to surpass the different kinds of disasters. All the Filipinos in the different regions in our country believe in ââ¬Å"Gabaâ⬠or karma which is one of the universal concepts among them. It may happen to those who deserted other people in the time of their needs. It may also happen to those who do injustice, unfairness, inequality, and discrimination to other people. The ââ¬Å"bahala naâ⬠attitude or fatalism is also one of the common traits of Filipinos. If they donââ¬â¢t know what to do and no options in a situation, most probably, thatââ¬â¢s the point wherein the Filipinos says ââ¬Å"bahala naâ⬠. The other one is the ââ¬Å"Maya naâ⬠habit. It is an attitude wherein they will do the things later or tomorrow that should be done right now. And the last one is the ââ¬Å"Ningas Kugonâ⬠habit. It is a manner of doing things good at first only, as it goes along it is getting worse. this habit is expressed in the phrase ââ¬Å"Sa una lang magaling. â⬠The belief on ââ¬Å"Kapalaranâ⬠(fortune) provides self-assurance and audacity to the Filipino. But even if kapalaran is not the way they want it to be, he/she can search for defense or guard and improved fortune by having ââ¬Å"anting-antingâ⬠(amulet) that keeps him/her from bad luck. The amulet makes the Filipino thatââ¬â¢s someone who is not a risk taker. Now, here are some common Filipino customs. A refusal to make an eye contact implies dishonesty, the eyebrows raised in recognition and to answer ââ¬Å"yesâ⬠, the lips are used to point things, nod upwards to greet someone, scratching oneââ¬â¢s head when one does not know the answer. ââ¬Å"Psst! â⬠is use to get an attention of someone in the workplace but not as social function. Filipinos are renowned for their toughness and flexibility. Through the ages, Filipino people have met all kinds of catastrophes and calamities ââ¬â revolutions, wars, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons and epidemics. They can incorporate any culture and prosper in any climate. Against the hardships of life, they simply bend, but never break. Just like a bamboo tree, it merely let go with the wind, follows where the direction of the wind would go but in never breaks. Just like a narra tree, it is tough and strong. Whatever disasters it suffers, it can surpass it but it never breaks. They go with the flow of life. Thatââ¬â¢s Juan Dela Cruz is. Thatââ¬â¢s how Filipino is.

Reflective Analysis Of My Personal And Professional...
This paper is a reflective analysis of my personal and professional development of my knowledge, skills, attitudes, showing how one aspect of my training has developed over year two of my nursing degree. It shall focus on communication, by using the nursing handover as an example. A handover can be described as a communication that results in a transfer of information and responsibility for a patient (Tregunno, 2009). I recognised in my first communication reflection in year one that it is a complicated and sometimes difficult activity, that requires the use of active listening skills, and an understanding of the content of what is being relayed, it gives and seeks information, as well as expressing emotions and attitudes, (Hinchliff, 2009). Throughout the two years the importance of good, clear and concise communication has become pivotal in my personal development. The patient handover is an excellent example of this; however in my first year I felt unequipped to give accurate handovers as I had little practice and was reluctant to develop this in clinical practice, as I felt that I had little engagement with my mentors over this area of my development. What s more, upon reflection I realised that as well as some nurses being dissatisfied with the handover process, in my first year I noticed that the handovers could be subjective and incomplete, and resulted in patients being left unattended for long periods of time, and call bells being unanswered as well asShow MoreRelatedThe Importance Of Nursing Patients With Multi Resistant Organisms ( Mros )1269 Words à |à 6 Pagesessential to the development of clinical knowledge and ability which allows the learner to consider personal and professional skills and identify needs for ongoing development (Levett-Jones et al, 2011).
